How to Fix "Outdated Server/Client" Error

This error appears when the version of your Minecraft client does not match the version your server is running.

Why this happens

  • Your client is running a newer version than the server.
  • Your client is running an older version than the server.

How to fix it

Option 1 โ€” Update your Minecraft client

Make sure your Minecraft launcher is set to use the latest version or the version that matches your server.

  1. Open your Minecraft launcher.
  2. Go to Installations and select the correct version.
  3. Launch the game and try connecting again.

Option 2 โ€” Change your server version

If you want your server to match a specific client version:

  1. Go to your server in the panel.
  2. Click the Options tab.
  3. Under Server Type, click Change Type.
  4. Select your server software and choose the correct Minecraft version.
  5. Click Install and restart your server.

Option 3 โ€” Use ViaVersion (Java only)

If you want to support multiple client versions simultaneously, install ViaVersion:

  1. Download ViaVersion from Modrinth.
  2. Upload the .jar file to your plugins/ folder.
  3. Restart your server. Players on different versions can now join.

๐Ÿ“ Note: ViaVersion only works on plugin-based servers such as Paper, Spigot, or Purpur.
